Celebration of the 10th Anniversary of Biophysics Week at Makerere University

Updated: Jun 12, 2025

Reflecting on a Meaningful Event

Our team at Makerere University, Uganda, recently took part in celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Biophysics Week. This event was significant for us. We wish to extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Dennis Okello, Dr. Dennis Muyimbwa, Benjamin Jingo, and Henry Kyagulanyi for their outstanding hospitality. Their unwavering support throughout the event made it memorable.

We were also honored to have Dr. Patrick Tonui and Willy Aganyanya with us. Mr. Silas Abok, President of the MMUST chapter, attended as well. He was supported by his executive team and 26 general members. The sense of camaraderie was palpable among all attendees.

Key Topics Discussed

Several important topics were discussed during the event. Here are the highlights:

  1. University Tour – This was led by Dr. Dennis Muyimbwa and Benjamin Jingo. Attendees had the opportunity to explore the university's facilities and resources.

  2. Introduction to Biophysics and the Biophysical Society – Dr. Jacqueline Makatiani from Moi University presented on this critical subject, shedding light on the main objectives of biophysics.

  3. Research Techniques in Biophysics – Dr. Philip Amuyunzu Mang’are and Mr. Willy Aganyanya covered advanced techniques such as AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy) and Confocal Microscopy. These discussions were insightful and sparked interest among participants.

  4. Membership Drive in Uganda – Led by Benjamin Jingo and Henry Kyagulanyi, this session aimed to expand the Biophysical Society's reach and enhance participation within Uganda.

  5. Prize Giving and Certification – This was presented by Dr. Dennis Muyimbwa and Ms. Liznaomy Achieng. It was a moment of joy, recognizing the achievements of individuals who contributed to the field.

The 10th Annual Biophysics Week celebration across Africa was undoubtedly successful. We congratulate both the Kenyan 🇰🇪 and Ugandan 🇺🇬 BPS/SABS teams for their remarkable efforts in making this event memorable. It has become a vital part of the biophysics community in our region.

Acknowledgments

I would also like to take this opportunity to commend Dr. Philip @Dad, the SABS Executive President. His exceptional leadership and mentorship have significantly shaped the direction of the society. His efforts in fostering a collaborative environment are greatly appreciated.

As always, SABS remains a driving force in advancing biophysics education and research. These areas are essential for creating a modern and innovative economy. We believe that a strong foundation in biophysics will lead to groundbreaking discoveries and solutions.

Looking Ahead

We eagerly anticipate the 11th anniversary celebration in 2026. It promises to be even bigger and better, building on the success of previous events. We encourage all members and potential members to start preparing for this significant occasion.

Cultural Experience

Our team also had the pleasure of enjoying the Basoga dance at the River Nile Falls. This cultural experience was an excellent addition to our time together. Pictured dancing in a white top (on the left) is the Secretary of the BPS MMUST Chapter.
